Father’s day was a pretty good one this year! I was able to spend time with my 2 boys, my dad and my father-in-law over the weekend. Add in the rest of the family and some relaxation time for a near perfect weekend. However, this wonderful weekend did mean that a few things didn’t get done as they should have. For example, this blog post should have been up before Monday morning. It is Monday night now and I am just getting it finished and up for you to read.

I also didn’t mow my yard, catch up on the overwhelming amount of unread emails, clean my garage, finish building a fence, or any of the other things on my to-do list. I have a big list of projects and things to work on; I’m convinced it will never get smaller but only grow as time go on. But despite it’s growing size, I am always working to mark things off the list. I could probably use some more downtime and rest but I’m a doer and get bored easily… That’s another issue for another time.

The point of this weekend was to spend time with loved ones, appreciate the fathers that have impacted me so greatly, and spend time being a father to my sons. Those things are what is important in my life. I know, although sometimes it takes a reminder, that there will always be projects, emails, jobs, and lawns to mow. I won’t always have an opportunity to swim in the pool with my boys, eat dinner with my dad, or just tell stories with my family.

The things in life that really matter can’t be crossed off a to-do list. The important things are people and the experiences you have with them.

Projects, jobs and companies will come and go but the people you live with and work with will be what you remember most. As you reach for goals in your personal and professional life, remember that the people around you are what make your goals special. So take an extra moment with your family, friends, coworkers and neighbors to make sure they know what is important.  You will be better for it in the long run!
