This question comes up over and over when I talk about my professional career. I have had 4 major career areas since graduating with an undergraduate degree in Physical Education, and they don’t seem to be connected on the surface. I started as a personal trainer, went to work on an ambulance as an EMT, moved into sales and project management with roofing/remodeling, and then went to work as an operations analyst for a Fortune 500 oil & gas company.

There has never been regret with these changes, I have enjoyed success in each one. There have been failures too, and I will write about those sometime because lessons abound with those experiences. The question still remains, how did I do that? The methods have varied, including going back to school twice. But there are 2 primary reasons why I’ve been able to make such drastic career changes: knowing what I want to do & focusing on helping people.

My father once told me, “You can do whatever you desire as long as you love God first, and know what you want.” Every time I have  been able to change careers or reach a substantial goal it is because I figured out what I wanted and set out to accomplish it. Sometimes these things take years and other times a goal can only take a matter of hours. No matter the size or time involved, the first step is always put God first then find out what you want.

I have always found satisfaction in helping people, and I love getting paid for it. Professionally, this has meant different things in my career, from caring for the sick and injured in their emergency to helping the managers of another group reach their goals in a business with over 5,000 employees. In all of my jobs, helping people has led me to success . Zig Ziglar said, “If you want to achieve your goals, help others achieve their goals.” This has been true for me.

So that’s my goal for this blog, to help more people. I want to help you (yes, you!) solve problems and reach your goals. Your goals may be personal or professional and include a myriad of different focuses but if you want to do it, be it, find it, or finish it then I can help. I will include motivational stories, tips & tricks, random insights, and other cool how-to’s to help you on your journey.

For now, click the comment box below and introduce yourself. (It’s only polite since I introduced myself to you.) If you have a goal in mind put it in there too, maybe I can help.

Nice post, Phil. Keep it up. Writing a book has been a goal of mine the past few years. Maybe you can help me edit it one day. Jeff

Great way to start your blog! If you do not know what you want, how do you know how to get there? If you got there? Or if you missed the mark. Very few people would get in a car for a trip without a destination or map. I am Katie & I’d like to be more productive with my time, personally & professionally.
