Do goals and the thought of setting them overwhelm you? Have you set big goals only to fall flat on your face trying to reach them? I’m reminded of shows like The Biggest Loser that show people shedding hundreds of pounds that make us all want to jump in and tackle a giant goal in a short period of time. This can be very motivating but motivation wanes and willpower seems to take days or weeks off at a time. Suddenly, you wake up feeling like a failure and giving up on your goal. Sometimes the saying “Go big or go home” defeats us before we can even have a chance to compete.

This is not the only way. Success doesn’t have to be massive. Goals do not have to overtake your life. Here’s my suggestion if big goals scare you:

Start small. No one runs a marathon without running short distances first. I’ve never heard of a Best Selling Author who got there with the first thing they ever wrote. You may want to lose 100 pounds, write a novel, travel to 30 countries or run 26.2 miles. But if the thought of such big goals overwhelms you then start smaller: lose 3 pounds, write 500 words, visit one country, run 1 mile. If losing 3 pounds is more than you have ever done then start smaller by focusing on 1 meal at a time or exercise for 10 minutes. If you don’t think you can write 500 words then sit down and write for 5 minutes. Do you get the point? Start small and get bigger as your grow. Soon 10 minutes of exercise will be easy and you can do 20. 500 words will roll out of you without effort and you will be well on your way to a novel.

Don’t let big, scary goals get in the way of doing what you want to do. Small goals can be incredibly powerful and have large impacts on your life. Big goals and small goals should be broken down into smaller steps. If you have a goal and need help breaking into small steps then let me help. I’m happy to walk through what you want and what it will take to get you there, no matter how big or small.
